The Knight-Corey House is a very old and important house located on Corey Lane in Boothbay, Maine. It was built way back in 1787. This house is a great example of the Federal style of architecture, which was popular in the United States after the American Revolution. Because of its historical value, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

What the Knight-Corey House Looks Like

The Knight-Corey House is in the middle of Boothbay village. It sits on a special piece of land shaped like a triangle, with Back River Road on one side and Corey Lane on the other.

Main Features of the House

This house is a large, two-and-a-half-story building made from strong wooden beams, known as a timber frame structure. It has a pointed roof called a gabled roof and a big chimney in the center. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboard siding. The foundation, which is the base of the house, is made from natural stones.

The front of the house faces south and is very balanced, with five sections across. The main door is in the middle, and it has tall, narrow windows on either side, called sidelight windows. Above the door, there's a special fan-shaped window, which is a common design in the Federal style.

Inside the Historic Home

Attached to the main house on the west side is a smaller, one-and-a-half-story section made of wood, which connects to a barn. Inside the Knight-Corey House, many of its original Federal period features have been carefully brought back to life. There are five fireplaces that still work, and the wooden posts supporting the house are shaped like old gunstocks. One of the most interesting parts is a unique, enclosed circular staircase.

History of the Knight-Corey House

The Knight-Corey House was built in 1787 by a man named Nicholas Knight. It was built on a spot where an old inn used to stand, which was started by one of the first people to settle in the area.

Boothbay Theatre Museum Years

From 1974 to 1990, the Knight-Corey House was home to the Boothbay Theatre Museum. This museum held a huge collection of items related to theater, put together by Franklyn Lenthall. It had many things connected to famous actors like Edwin Booth and Sarah Bernhardt. The museum closed in 1990, and its collections were sold off.
