The Knightstown Academy is a historic building located in Knightstown, Indiana. It was first built in 1876 as a special school. This school was connected to the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers.
This old building stands north of the National Road (which is also US 40). You can find it on Cary Street at Washington Street. Today, the Knightstown Academy is no longer a school. It has been turned into apartment homes.

What is the Knightstown Academy?
The Knightstown Academy started as a private school. It was built in 1876 for students in the area. The school was run by the Society of Friends, a religious group. They focused on education and community values.
For many years, it served as an important learning center. It helped educate young people in Knightstown. The building has a long history of teaching.
Its Unique Design
The Knightstown Academy building has a very special look. It was designed in a style called Second Empire. This style was popular in the late 1800s.
One of its most noticeable features is its mansard roof. This type of roof has a unique shape with slopes on all sides. The building also has two tall towers. These towers are four stories high. One tower is topped with a telescope, and the other has a globe. These features make the building stand out.
From School to Movie Set
After many years, the Knightstown Academy stopped being a private school. It then became the local public high school for a long time. Many students attended classes within its historic walls.
Later, the building found a new purpose. It was turned into apartment homes. But that's not its only claim to fame! The gymnasium attached to the building was used in a famous movie. It was the home court for the Hickory Huskers team in the 1985 film Hoosiers. This movie is about high school basketball in Indiana.
A Place in History
The Knightstown Academy is recognized as a very important historical site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it is a special place that should be preserved.
The building is also part of the larger Knightstown Historic District. This district includes many other old and important buildings in the town. Being on the National Register helps protect the building for future generations.
