History of Knowles Chapel
Knowles Memorial Chapel was a special gift to Rollins College. It was given by Frances Knowles Warren to honor her father, Francis Bangs Knowles. He was a very important person because he helped start both Rollins College and the city of Winter Park!
A famous architect named Ralph Adams Cram designed the chapel. He designed many churches and cathedrals, but he said Knowles Chapel was his favorite. In the summer of 2007, the chapel's stone walls were cleaned and fixed. This work was paid for by a special fund set up by Frances Knowles Warren.
The Chapel Organ
The chapel has a wonderful organ that was built in 1932 by Ernest M. Skinner. In the mid-1950s, Skinner's company, Aeolian-Skinner, updated it.
Later, between 1999 and 2002, the organ was completely fixed up and made new again by Randall Dyer & Associates. At the same time, the Dyer company also built a brand new organ. This new organ was placed at the back of the balcony, around the beautiful Rose Window. John J. Tyrrell, who used to be the president of Aeolian-Skinner, was very involved in this work.
Stained Glass Windows
The chapel has a stunning rose window at the back. This window shows the seven liberal arts, which are different subjects like math, music, and grammar. The window was a team effort between architect Ralph Adams Cram and a talented stained-glass artist named William Herbert Burnham.
Current Use of the Chapel
Knowles Memorial Chapel is still used as the main chapel for Rollins College. The person in charge of the chapel is like the pastor for the college.
The chapel is also a popular place for many musical events. It's especially busy during the annual Bach Festival of Winter Park, where lots of concerts are held.
