About Kobi Oz
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Kobi Oz, whose birth name is Ya'akov Uzan, was born in Sderot, Israel, on September 17, 1969. His parents were Tunisian Jewish people who moved to Israel in 1942. They came to Israel to find a safer life.
In 1985, when he was 16, Ya'akov Uzan chose the stage name Kobi Oz. He started playing music and writing songs. He began his music journey playing keyboards for a band called Sfatayim. This band played traditional Moroccan music.
Forming Teapacks
In 1988, Kobi Oz released two solo songs, "Silonim" (Jets) and "Lispor kvasim" (Counting Sheep). These songs did not become very popular at the time. However, "Lispor kvasim" was later used in Teapacks' first album.
Two years later, in 1990, Kobi Oz formed the band Teapacks. He started the band with guitarist Einav Cohen, bassist Gal Peremen, and drummer Tamir Yemini. Even though many band members have changed over the years, Kobi Oz and Gal Peremen are still part of Teapacks today.
Music and Stories
Kobi Oz often uses his own life and family history in his music videos. For example, the music video for the Teapacks song "Avodat kapayim" (Manual Labour) includes old videos of Kobi Oz when he was in the band Sfatayim. The song itself tells the story of his time with Sfatayim.
Another song, "Elohai" (God), released in 2010, used videos from Kobi Oz's Bar Mitzvah. It also included a recording of his grandfather singing. The song "Lo haya lano klum" (We Had Nothing) tells the story of Jewish people moving from Arab and Muslim countries. The video for this song features Kobi Oz's mother, Rachel Uzan.
Other Work and Activism
Besides his music, Kobi Oz has also written two books. His books are called Moshe Chuato and the Raven (published in 1996) and Petty Hoodlum (published in 2002).
In 2007, Kobi Oz helped organize a large event to help his hometown, Sderot. Sderot was often under rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. About 40,000 people came to Rabin Square in Tel Aviv to show their support for the people of Sderot.
In 2010, Kobi Oz released his second solo album, Mizmorey Nevochim (Psalms for the Perplexed).
