Koekelberg is a town, also called a municipality, in Belgium. It's one of the 19 towns that make up the Brussels-Capital Region. This means it's part of the larger Brussels city area.

Koekelberg is located in the northwest part of the Brussels region. It shares its borders with other towns like Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Ganshoren, Jette, and Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. Just like all towns in Brussels, Koekelberg is officially bilingual. This means both French and Dutch are spoken and used in official ways.

As of 2022, about 22,023 people lived in Koekelberg. It's the smallest town in the Brussels region when it comes to how many people live there. The total area of Koekelberg is about 1.18 square kilometers (which is about 0.45 square miles). This makes it a very densely populated area, meaning many people live close together.

The most famous landmark in Koekelberg is the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart. This is one of the largest Roman Catholic churches in the world! The main way to get around Koekelberg is through its connected metro stations, Simonis and Elisabeth. These stations are part of the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (STIB/MIVB) system, which helps people travel all over Brussels.

Exploring Koekelberg's Landmarks

Koekelberg has several interesting places to visit and learn about. From grand buildings to peaceful parks, there's a lot to see.

The Municipal Hall

The Municipal Hall of Koekelberg is an important building where the local government works. It's located on a square called Place Henri Vanhuffel or Henri Vanhuffelplein. The building was first built in 1882. Later, in 1938, it got a new, modern look with an Art Deco style facade. This design was created by an architect named Henri-Aimé Jacobs.

The National Basilica of the Sacred Heart

The National Basilica of the Sacred Heart, often just called the Koekelberg Basilica, is a huge and impressive church. It's one of the largest churches in the world by its size! Even though it looks very old, it was actually only finished in 1969. The basilica mixes two styles: Art Deco and neo-Byzantine. If you go up to its dome, you can get an amazing panoramic view of Brussels and the areas around it.

Lefever House

Lefever House is a special town house built in 1913. It's a great example of Art Nouveau architecture, which was a popular style in the early 20th century. The house was designed by an architect named Fernand Lefever. Because of its unique design and history, Lefever House has been listed as a protected monument since 2006. This means it's kept safe and preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Green Spaces and Parks

Koekelberg also has some lovely green areas where people can relax and enjoy nature. These include Elisabeth Park and Victoria Park. They offer a nice escape from the busy city and are great places for walks or just spending time outdoors.
