Kohl's Plaza facts for kids
Kohl's Plaza is a shopping center located at 1814 Central Avenue in Colonie, New York. It's a type of shopping area called a "strip mall." This plaza is home to a large department store called Kohl's and many other smaller shops and restaurants. It was one of the first two Kohl's stores to open in the Capital Region of New York. Before Kohl's moved in, the plaza was known as Builder's Square Plaza because a big home improvement store called Builders Square was the main store there. This shopping area has been around since at least 1990. Even before that, from 1946 to 1986, a place called the Mohawk Drive-in Theatre was located right where the plaza is now.

Who Owns Kohl's Plaza?
The Kohl's Plaza is owned by a company called Colonie Realty Associates NY, LLC. This company is based in Closter, New Jersey.
Kohl's Department Store
Kohl's is a popular department store that sells clothes, home goods, and many other items. The company first thought about opening stores in New York's Capital Region around 1995. They finally decided to open two stores in late 2002. One of these stores was built right here in Kohl's Plaza. The other was in Clifton Park, New York.
The Kohl's store in this plaza is very large, covering about 88,000 square feet. That's a lot of space for shopping! This new Kohl's store officially opened its doors to shoppers on October 10, 2003.
From Builder's Square to Kohl's
Before Kohl's, the main store at this plaza was Builder's Square. This home improvement store was added to the plaza around 1990.
The Builder's Square company eventually closed all its stores in 1999. A company called Kmart used to own Builder's Square until 1997. Even after Kmart sold the Builder's Square chain, Kmart still had the lease for this particular store location. When Kmart faced financial difficulties in 2002, it created a chance for a new store to take over the space. The old Builder's Square store was very big, about 106,000 square feet. It was eventually taken down to make room for the new Kohl's store that stands there today.
