Koji Yamase (born September 22, 1981) is a Japanese football player who played as a Midfielder. He is known for his long career with several Japanese clubs. Koji comes from a family of athletes. His father, Isao Yamase, was a biathlete who competed in the 1984 Winter Olympics. His brother, Yukihiro Yamase, is also a football player.

Koji Yamase's Football Journey
Koji Yamase was born in Sapporo, Japan. After finishing high school, he joined Consadole Sapporo in 2000. This club was in the J2 League at the time. He quickly became an important midfielder for the team.
Starting Strong at Consadole Sapporo
In his first year, Consadole Sapporo won the J2 League championship. This meant they were promoted to the top league, the J1 League. Koji played regularly and was even named the Rookie of the Year in 2001. However, he faced some challenges. In 2002, he got injured and couldn't play much. That year, Consadole Sapporo finished last and went back down to the J2 League.
Moving to Urawa Red Diamonds
In 2003, Koji moved to Urawa Red Diamonds, a club in the J1 League. This was a successful time for him. In 2003, Urawa Red Diamonds won the 2003 J.League Cup. The next year, in 2004, they finished second in the J1 League and also came second in the J.League Cup.
Longest Stay at Yokohama F. Marinos
Koji Yamase joined Yokohama F. Marinos in 2005. This club had won the J1 League championship for two years in a row before he arrived. He was given the number 10 jersey and played many games as an attacking midfielder. He spent the longest part of his career at this club, playing there for six seasons.
Later Career Clubs
After Yokohama F. Marinos, Koji moved to Kawasaki Frontale in 2011. He played in all 34 matches during the 2011 season. However, he played less in 2012.
In 2013, Koji joined Kyoto Sanga FC, a J2 League club. He was a regular player for them until 2016. Later, he played for Avispa Fukuoka for two seasons (2017-2018). In 2019, he moved to Ehime FC, and then to Renofa Yamaguchi FC from 2022 to 2024.
Playing for Japan's National Team
Koji Yamase also represented Japan on the international stage.
Youth National Teams
In June 2001, Koji was chosen to play for the Japan U-20 national team. He played in the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship. In this tournament, he played all three matches and scored two goals.
Senior National Team
Japan's national team coach, Ivica Osim, gave Koji his first chance to play for the senior Japan national team on August 9, 2006. This was in a friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago. Koji scored his first goal for Japan on August 22, 2007, in a friendly game against Cameroon. He played a total of 13 games for Japan and scored 5 goals.
