Koji Yamase is a Japanese football (soccer) player. He was born on September 22, 1981. He plays as a midfielder for Renofa Yamaguchi FC. Koji comes from a family of athletes. His father, Isao Yamase, was an Olympic biathlete. His brother, Yukihiro Yamase, is also a football player.

Koji Yamase's Club Career

Early Career in Sapporo

Koji Yamase was born in Sapporo, Japan. After finishing high school, he joined Consadole Sapporo in 2000. This club was in the J2 League, which is Japan's second-highest football league.

He quickly became an important midfielder. His team, Consadole Sapporo, won the J2 League in 2000. This win helped them move up to the top league, the J1 League. In 2001, Koji was named the Rookie of the Year for his great performance.

In 2002, Koji was given the number 10 shirt, which is often worn by key players. However, he faced injuries that kept him from playing much that season. His team, Consadole Sapporo, finished last and went back down to the J2 League.

Playing for Urawa Reds

In 2003, Koji moved to Urawa Reds, a club in the J1 League. His new team won the J.League Cup in 2003. The next year, in 2004, Urawa Reds finished second in the J1 League. They also came in second in the J.League Cup that year.

Time at Yokohama F. Marinos

Koji joined Yokohama F. Marinos in 2005. This team had won the J1 League for two years in a row. He was given the number 10 shirt again. Koji played as an offensive midfielder and spent the longest part of his career at this club.

Later Career Moves

In 2011, Koji moved to Kawasaki Frontale. He played in all 34 matches during his first season there. However, he played less in 2012.

From 2013 to 2016, Koji played for Kyoto Sanga FC in the J2 League. He was a regular player for them. After that, he played for Avispa Fukuoka for two seasons (2017-2018). In 2019, he joined Ehime FC. He currently plays for Renofa Yamaguchi FC.

Koji Yamase's National Team Career

Youth National Team

In June 2001, Koji Yamase was chosen to play for the Japan U-20 national team. He played in the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship. During this tournament, he played in all three matches and scored two goals.

Senior National Team

Koji made his first appearance for the senior Japan national team on August 9, 2006. This was a friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago. The coach, Ivica Osim, gave him this chance.

His first goal for Japan came on August 22, 2007. It was in another friendly match, this time against Cameroon. Koji played 13 games for Japan and scored 5 goals in total. His last game for the national team was in 2010.
