Kokum oil is a special kind of oil that comes from the seeds of the kokum tree. This tree is also known as the wild mangosteen or red mangosteen. Kokum oil can be used in food, but it's also very popular for other things like skin care!

The kokum fruit has about five to eight large seeds inside. These seeds make up a good part of the fruit's weight. Inside each seed is a smaller part called a kernel, which is where the oil comes from. The seeds are usually collected from April to May when the fruits are ready.

Getting Kokum Seeds

Collecting kokum seeds is done by hand. People either pick the fruits directly from the tree or shake the branches with long sticks to make the fruits fall. Once the fruits are on the ground, they are broken open, often with sticks, to get the seeds out. After the seeds are separated, they are dried. This drying process helps to remove water from them.

What is Kokum Butter Like?

Kokum oil is often called kokum butter because it's solid at room temperature, just like butter! It can be light gray or yellowish. This oil is special because it has a lot of saturated fats, which makes it firm.

One cool thing about kokum butter is that its melting point is very close to human body temperature (around 37°C or 98.6°F). This means that when you put it on your skin, it melts easily and feels smooth.

Property What it's like
Appearance Light pinkish-white color
Smell A unique kokum scent
Taste A typical kokum fat taste
Melts at 34-40 °C (93-104 °F)

Uses of Kokum Butter

Kokum butter is great for your skin because it's not greasy and gets absorbed quickly. It's often used instead of cocoa butter in many products.

Because it melts easily on skin and stays stable, kokum butter is perfect for making:

  • Lipsticks and balms: It helps them glide on smoothly.
  • Bar soaps: It adds a nice texture and moisturizing feel.
  • Skin lotions: It helps keep your skin soft and hydrated.
