Before starting KMDK, E. R. Eswaran ran in elections for the KMK party. In the May 2009 national elections, he ran in the Coimbatore area. He came in third place, getting 1.28 lakh votes. (A lakh is 100,000, so he got 128,000 votes). He also came third in a special election for the Thondamuthur Assembly area in 2009.

The KMDK party is seen as a group that mainly represents the Gounder community. This community lives mostly in the western districts of Tamil Nadu, which is also known as the Kongu Region.
