Koo Hye-sun (Hangul: 구혜선; born November 9, 1984) is a talented South Korean actress, singer, director, and artist. She became very well-known for her roles in popular TV shows like Hearts of Nineteen (2006), The King And I (2007), and especially Boys Over Flowers (2009). She also starred in Take Care of Us, Captain (2012), Angel Eyes (2014), and Blood (2015).

Koo Hye-sun's Career Journey
Becoming a Star: Acting Roles
Koo Hye-sun first became popular online as an ulzzang, which means someone with a very attractive face. She started her journey in entertainment hoping to be a singer. However, her agency, YG Entertainment, suggested she try acting instead.
She first appeared in a commercial for Sambo computers. Then, she made her TV debut in a horror series called Anagram. Her role as Hye-jin in the 2004 sitcom Nonstop 5 really caught the audience's attention.
Koo Hye-sun quickly became famous after starring in the 2006 TV drama Hearts of Nineteen. She also impressed critics with her acting in the historical drama The King and I. Later, she appeared in another historical drama, Strongest Chil Woo.
Her biggest role came in 2009 when she played Geum Jan-di in the super popular drama Boys Over Flowers. This show made her famous across Asia!
After a short break, Koo Hye-sun played a female pilot in the 2012 series Take Care of Us, Captain. She also starred in Absolute Darling, a Taiwanese drama based on a popular manga (Japanese comic).
In 2014, she returned to the small screen in Angel Eyes. She played a woman who gets her eyesight back and decides to become an emergency rescue worker. In 2015, she starred in the vampire drama Blood, playing a very smart doctor.
Singing and Songwriting Talents
Koo Hye-sun has also shown her musical skills by releasing songs for TV show soundtracks and her own digital singles. In 2005, she released "Happy Birthday to You" for Nonstop 5. In 2006, her song "Sarang Ga" ("Love Story") became the main song for Hearts of Nineteen.
In 2009, she released her first album, Breath, which featured new-age music. She also wrote the song "Brown Hair" in 2010. In 2012, she released "It's You" and even directed its music video herself!
She continued to release music, including her second album Breath 2 in 2015. In 2016, she released her first full album, And Spring, which had 11 songs. In May 2022, she released a special album called "Piano New Age Best Album."
Directing Films
Koo Hye-sun also works as a film director. Her first short film, The Madonna, was shown at the 2009 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. It won an "Audience Award" at the Pusan Asian Short Film Festival and the "Spotlight Award" at the Short Shorts Film Festival in Tokyo. She said she enjoys directing because it lets her combine her interests in music, art, and literature.
Her first full-length movie, Magic, was screened at the 6th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival in 2010. She also directed short films like You (2010) and Fragments of Sweet Memories (2012).
In 2011, Koo Hye-sun started her own company, Koo Hye-sun Film, to produce her projects. Her second movie, The Peach Tree, was the first film made under her new company. She also wrote the theme song and a novel version of the film.
In 2014, she directed her fifth film, Daughter. She not only produced, wrote, and directed the movie but also starred in it as a mother. This film aimed to bring attention to the issue of child abuse.
Artist and Ambassador Roles
Besides acting and directing, Koo Hye-sun is also a talented writer and artist. In 2009, she published her first illustrated novel, Tango. It was a bestseller, selling 30,000 copies in just one week!
Her book release happened at the same time as her first art exhibition, also called "Tango," which attracted 10,000 visitors. She held her second art exhibition in 2012, and she donated all the money from her artwork sales to help children with leukemia. She has also served as an ambassador for various causes, including the International 3D Festival and the Korean Leukemia Association.
Personal Life
In 2016, Koo Hye-sun confirmed she was dating her Blood co-star Ahn Jae-hyun. They got married on May 21, 2016. Instead of having a big wedding party, they decided to donate the money to the children's ward of Severance Hospital, which was a very kind gesture. They even appeared together in a reality show called Newlywed Diary, which showed their married life.
In 2019, they decided to get a divorce. Koo Hye-sun later announced in September 2019 that she would take a break from the entertainment industry to go back to college.
Helping Others: Philanthropy
Koo Hye-sun is also known for her generosity. On July 12, 2022, she made a donation to her old university, Sungkyunkwan University. This money was meant to help students in need through a special fund. The money she donated came from prize money she won at the 24th Short Shorts International Short Film Festival.
