Koorabye is a special Aboriginal community located in the beautiful Kimberley area of Western Australia. It's a place where people live and share their culture.

About Koorabye Community

Koorabye is found about 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) southwest of a town called Fitzroy Crossing. It's a bit of a journey to get there, as you travel along an unsealed road for about 95 kilometers from the Great Northern Highway. This road also goes through the Yungngora community.

The community started to be built in 1992. Today, about 50 people live in Koorabye. They live in 14 houses that are built around a central open area. The community also has a special center for women, living spaces for single men, and a primary school for the children.

Land and Culture

The land where Koorabye is located is part of an important agreement called the SDWK Nyikina Mangala Indigenous land use agreement. This agreement helps to recognize the traditional rights of Aboriginal people to their land.

Many people in the Koorabye community have strong cultural ties to the Walmatjarri people. The Walmatjarri are an Aboriginal group from the Great Sandy Desert, and their culture and traditions are very important to the community.

How Koorabye is Managed

Koorabye does not have its own official community group. Instead, it is looked after by a larger organization called the Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal Corporation. This group helps Koorabye by providing different services. They support the community in many ways, helping with daily life and future plans.

Planning for the Future

To help guide how the community grows, a special plan was created called Koorabye Layout Plan No.2. This plan was made following rules set by the State Planning Policy 3.2 Aboriginal Settlements.

Both the community members and the Western Australian Planning Commission approved this plan in 2007. It helps make sure that Koorabye develops in a way that works best for everyone living there.
