History of Kopperl
Kopperl was started in 1881. It was named after Moritz Kopperl, a rich banker and railroad owner from Galveston. The town became an important place for shipping goods along the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway.
The number of people living in Kopperl reached its highest point in 1904, with 329 residents. After that, the population slowly went down to about 225 by the 1970s. It has stayed around that number ever since.
The "Satan's Storm" Heat Burst
Something very unusual happened in Kopperl just after midnight on June 15, 1960. A rare weather event called a "heat burst" hit the community. This happened when a thunderstorm was ending and had no more rain.
Normally, rain helps cool the air that falls from a storm. But without rain, super-hot air rushed down to the ground. This air came down as extremely hot wind gusts, blowing as fast as 75 miles per hour. The temperature shot up very quickly, reportedly reaching close to 140°F (60°C). This was much hotter than the highest temperature ever officially recorded in Texas. Locals called this strange event "Satan's Storm," and it became a famous story in the area.
Kopperl was also mentioned in a song called "Texas Trilogy." This song was written by a Texas musician named Steve Fromholz and was also sung by Lyle Lovett.
