Korneliya Petrova Ninova (Bulgarian: Корнелия Петрова Нинова) is a well-known Bulgarian politician. She used to be the leader and a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). From 2016 to 2024, she was the chairperson of the BSP. Currently, she leads a political group called Nepokorna Bulgaria, which is a centre-left movement.

About Korneliya Ninova

Korneliya Ninova was born on January 16, 1969, in a village called Krushovitsa, in Bulgaria.

Her Education and Early Career

She studied law at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". After graduating, she worked as a trainee judge in the Sofia City Court in 1995. From 1995 to 1996, she was a legal adviser for the Sofia Municipality.

Between 1996 and 1997, Korneliya Ninova worked as an investigator. She also served as a counsel for BTC for a few months in 1997. From 1997 to 2005, she was the CEO of a company called "Technoimpex" JSC.

Her Role in Government

From September 2005 to March 2007, Ninova was a Deputy Minister of Economy and Energy. Her job involved foreign economic policy. In December 2005, she was also chosen to be the Chairperson of the Board of "Bulgartabac Holding" AD. She left her position as deputy minister in May 2007.

Leading the Socialist Party

On May 8, 2016, Korneliya Ninova was elected as the chairperson of the Socialist Party. She won with 395 votes, beating the previous president, Mihail Mikov, who received 349 votes.

In an interview in April 2017, Ninova mentioned that British Conservative prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May were her "favorite politicians." This was seen as unusual for a socialist politician.

She had some disagreements with Sergey Stanishev, who was a former secretary of the BSP and a past president of the Party of European Socialists.

On May 28, 2019, Ninova resigned as the leader of the BSP. This happened because the party felt they had not done well in the 2019 European Parliament election under her leadership. However, the party actually gained more support and more Members of the European Parliament compared to the previous election. She later withdrew her resignation at the Socialist Party's congress and remained the party's leader.

After her party's coalition, "BSP for Bulgaria," had difficult results in the 2021 Bulgarian general election, Ninova resigned again from her leadership roles in both the BSP and the coalition.

Her Work in Parliament

Korneliya Ninova has been very active in the Bulgarian Parliament. Here are some of the groups and committees she has been a part of:

  • She was part of the Parliamentary Group of Coalition for Bulgaria starting from July 14, 2009.
  • She worked on the Internal Security and Public Order committee from July 29, 2009.
  • She was also on the Committee on Economic Policy, Energy and Tourism from July 30, 2009.
  • She served as a Deputy Representative for the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
  • She was part of several friendship groups with other countries, including Bulgaria – Italy, Bulgaria – Morocco (where she was Deputy Chairman), Bulgaria – Russia, and Bulgaria – France. These groups help build good relationships between countries.
  • She also introduced new laws, such as a bill to change the Law on Privatization, a bill to amend the Law on Income Tax of Individuals, and a bill to change the Law on Medical Institutions.
