Korneliya Petrova Ninova (Bulgarian: Корнелия Петрова Нинова) is a Bulgarian politician. She used to be the leader and a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). She was the chairwoman of BSP from 2016 to 2024. Currently, she leads a political group called Nepokorna Bulgaria, which is a centre-left movement.

Biography and Early Career

Korneliya Ninova was born on 16 January 1969. Her birthplace was Krushovitsa village in the Miziya municipality, Vratsa district, in what was then the People's Republic of Bulgaria.

She studied law at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". After graduating in 1995, she worked as a trainee judge in the Sofia City Court. From 1995 to 1996, she was a legal adviser for the Sofia Municipality.

Between 1996 and 1997, Korneliya Ninova worked as an investigator. She then served as Counsel for BTC from March to August 1997. For eight years, from 1997 to 2005, she was the CEO of "Technoimpex" JSC.

Political Roles and Leadership

In September 2005, Ninova became the Deputy Minister of Economy and Energy. Her role focused on foreign economic policy. In December 2005, she was also chosen to be the Chairperson of the Board of "Bulgartabac Holding" AD. She was later removed from her role as deputy minister in May 2007.

On 8 May 2016, Korneliya Ninova was elected as the chairperson of the Socialist Party. She won with 395 votes, beating the previous president, Mihail Mikov, who received 349 votes.

In a TV interview in April 2017, Ninova mentioned that British Conservative prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May were politicians she admired. This was seen as an unusual statement for a socialist politician.

Ninova has had disagreements with Sergey Stanishev, a former BSP secretary and past president of the Party of European Socialists.

On 28 May 2019, Ninova resigned as the leader of the BSP. This happened after the party's results in the 2019 European Parliament election. However, she soon withdrew her resignation at the Socialist Party's congress and remained as the party's leader.

After the 2021 Bulgarian general election, where her party's coalition (BSP for Bulgaria) did not perform as well as hoped, Ninova resigned again from her leadership roles within the BSP and the coalition.

Work as a Member of Parliament

Korneliya Ninova has been an active Member of Parliament, participating in various groups and committees.

  • She served on the Internal Security and Public Order Committee from 29 July 2009.
