Bulgarian (български език) is a language mainly spoken in Bulgaria. It is also used in parts of North Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine, and Moldova. Around 9 million people use Bulgarian as their main language.
Bulgarian belongs to a large group of languages called Indo-European. It is part of the Slavic family, specifically the South Slavic branch. This means it is similar to languages like Macedonian and Serbian.
Bulgarian is also part of a special group called the Balkan Sprachbund. This group includes languages like Greek, Macedonian, Romanian, and Albanian. These languages share some words and grammar rules because people speaking them have lived close to each other for a long time.
