Kosta Barbarouses' Football Journey
Kosta was born in New Zealand and has Greek family roots. Before becoming a professional player, he played for school teams and local clubs like Wellington Olympic and Miramar Rangers.
Playing for Wellington Phoenix
Kosta first joined Wellington Phoenix when he was only 17 years old. He was the youngest player on the team. He made his first professional appearance in October 2007.
He scored his first goal for the team in January 2009. His second goal was a cool volley that went over the goalkeeper's head! Kosta played 21 matches and scored two goals during his first time with the Phoenix.
Moving to Brisbane Roar
In 2010, Kosta decided to join Brisbane Roar. He wanted to play more often and liked their style of football. He quickly became a key player for them.
Kosta scored his first goal for Brisbane Roar against his old team, Wellington Phoenix. He had a great season in 2010–11, scoring 12 goals in 33 games. This helped him earn a spot on the A-League All-Star Team.
Playing in Russia and Greece
After his success in Australia, Kosta moved to Europe. In 2011, he signed a three-year contract with a Russian team called Alania Vladikavkaz. He scored a goal in his very first game for them!
In 2012, Kosta went on loan to Panathinaikos, a big club in Greece. He played 11 games there, including a match against their rivals, Olympiacos.
Returning to Melbourne Victory
In 2013, Kosta came back to Australia and joined Melbourne Victory. He played under coach Ange Postecoglou again, who he had worked with at Brisbane Roar.
Kosta played many important games for Melbourne Victory. He helped them win championships and the FFA Cup.
Back to Wellington Phoenix (Twice!)
Kosta returned to his hometown club, Wellington Phoenix, in 2016. He signed a three-year deal, but left after one season for personal reasons.
He then went back to Melbourne Victory for another two years. After that, he joined Sydney FC in 2019.
In 2022, Kosta came back to Wellington Phoenix for a third time! On January 20, 2025, he scored his 100th A-League Men goal, which is a huge achievement for any player.
