Kosuke Ota (born July 23, 1987) is a Japanese former football player. He played as a defender, usually on the left side.
Playing for Clubs
Kosuke Ota started his football journey with Yokohama FC in 2006. After three years, he moved to Shimizu S-Pulse in 2009. He played 85 league games for them and scored two goals.
In 2012, Ota joined FC Tokyo. He stayed there for three years. Then, he decided to play football outside Japan for the first time. He moved to the Netherlands to play for Vitesse in the Eredivisie league. He played 28 matches for Vitesse during the 2015–16 and 2016–17 seasons. However, he found it hard to settle in the Netherlands. So, he returned to FC Tokyo in Japan.
Later, Ota played for Nagoya Grampus from 2019 to 2020. In 2020, he moved to Australia to play for Perth Glory. He made his first appearance for Perth Glory in 2021 as a substitute. In that game against Brisbane Roar, he helped his team by setting up two goals.
On July 18, 2022, Ota signed with Machida Zelvia, a club in Japan's J2 league. He played for them during the middle of the 2022 season.
On October 3, 2023, Kosuke Ota officially announced that he would retire from playing football at the end of that season. This decision came after he played very few games for Machida Zelvia.
Playing for Japan
Youth National Team
In July 2007, Kosuke Ota was chosen to play for the Japan U-20 national team. He played in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. In this tournament, he played one match as a left-back against Nigeria.
Senior National Team
Ota made his first appearance for the senior Japan national team on January 6, 2010. This was during a qualifying match for the 2011 Asian Cup against Yemen. He played a total of 7 matches for the Japan national team between 2010 and 2015.
