History of the Krog Street Market Area
The land where Krog Street Market now stands has a long and interesting past. It used to be home to two main areas: The Stove Works and a former movie studio.
The Atlanta Stove Works
One part of the market is in a building called The Stove Works. This building was once a factory. It opened way back in 1889. The factory made things like pot-belly stoves and iron cooking pans. In the 1920s, it was very busy. They even exported a special stove called the "32 BOX." This stove was so popular it helped the factory grow a lot.
However, after many years, the factory closed down around 1988. The building was empty for a while. Later, it was changed into a place with offices and restaurants. One famous restaurant, Rathbun's, opened there in 2004.
The Former Tyler Perry Studios
The other part of Krog Street Market is on land that used to be a movie studio. This was the home of Tyler Perry Studios until 2008. Tyler Perry is a famous filmmaker and actor. He bought the land in 2006. Later, his studios moved to a new location in Southwest Atlanta.
The plan for Krog Street Market was to connect these two old areas. The Stove Works building was kept mostly the same. There's even an old bridge over Krog Street that was made into a walking bridge. It's now part of the market complex. This project cost a lot of money, about $70 million, to turn these old buildings into the lively market you see today.
