The Krueger House Story
Who Was Albert Krueger?
Albert Rudolph Emil Krueger was born in Berlin, Germany. He first moved to New York City in the United States. In 1887, he traveled south to Florida. There, he started growing popular fruits like pineapples and oranges.
Building a Plantation
Around 1890, Albert Krueger bought a large piece of land in Stuart. It was about 80 acres, which is like 60 football fields! He named his new farm the Burn Brae pineapple plantation. The name Burn Brae comes from Scottish words. It means "house on the hill by the water." This name was chosen because of his wife Annie's Scottish family background.
The First Home
In 1894, Albert built his first big house on the plantation. It was a simple but grand home. It stood along a small creek that flowed from the St. Lucie River. This creek was later dug deeper. This made it easier to move supplies to and from his pineapple and citrus farms. Today, this creek is known as Krueger Creek.
A Growing Family Needs More Space
Albert Krueger married Annie Donaldson Kincaid Speirs in 1893. By 1897, they had three sons and one daughter. Their family was growing fast! They needed a much bigger house for everyone.
So, in October 1903, a builder named Henry Klopp started working on a new, two-story house. The Krueger family moved into their completed new home in the middle of February 1904. This larger house had four bedrooms. It also had a big attic room with special handmade wooden supports. The house was built using strong Florida pine wood.
Bringing the House Back to Life
Many years later, from 1997 to 2002, the Krueger House was carefully fixed up. Bill and Anne Krueger Stimmell worked hard to restore it. Thanks to them, this historic house still stands today.
