Kuhimana was an important leader, or High Chief, on the island of Maui in ancient Hawaii. He was the seventh known ruler, or Moʻi, of Maui. This means he was the main king or chief of the island.

He is mentioned in old Hawaiian chants and stories. Not many details are known about him from these ancient legends. He was born around the year 1393.

Who Was Kuhimana?

Kuhimana was a powerful ruler of the island of Maui. He was known as a Moʻi, which was the title for the highest chief or king. His name was given to him after a Hawaiian god.

He is sometimes called a "semi-mythical" person. This means that while he was a real historical figure, many stories about him come from old legends. These legends might mix facts with traditional tales.

His Family and Life

Kuhimana was the son of Luakoa of Maui. This made him the grandson of another important figure named Paukei. After his father, Luakoa, Kuhimana became the next king of Maui.

Kuhimana married a chiefess named Kaumana I. She was also known by the name Kaʻana. Together, they had two children:

  • A son named Kamaloohua
  • A daughter named Waohaʻakuna

His daughter, Waohaʻakuna, helped connect the royal families of Maui and Oahu. This happened through her descendants, like Maʻilikākahi of Oahu.

Kuhimana's time as ruler ended when he was killed in a battle. This battle was known as the Battle of Kaeleiki. After his death, his son, Kamaloʻohua, took over as the new Moʻi of Maui.
