Kukatj, also called Gugadj, was an Aboriginal language from the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. It is considered an extinct language. This means that no one speaks it anymore as their main language. The last known speaker was recorded in 1975.
The Kukatj language was spoken by the Kukatj people. Another name, Kalibamu, might have been a different way of saying Kukatj, or it could have been a very similar language.

What is Kukatj?
Kukatj is a language that used to be spoken by Aboriginal people in the northern part of Queensland, Australia. It belongs to a group of languages called Paman languages. Sadly, Kukatj is no longer spoken today. The last person known to speak it was recorded in 1975. This means the language likely died out around 2003.
Different Names for Kukatj
The Kukatj language has been known by several names over time. Sometimes it was called Gugadj. It is important not to confuse Kukatj with another language called Kukatja. That language is spoken far away in Western Australia. It is also different from the Luritja dialect spoken in the Northern Territory, which some people also call Kukatja.
Other names that have been used for Kukatj include Marago, Gudadj, Gudadji, Gugady, Gugatj, Kokatj, Kukatji, Kukatyi, and Konggada.
Kalibamu: A Related Language?
Kalibamu is another name that is often linked to Kukatj. The AIATSIS has a separate code for Kalibamu. This suggests it might be a distinct language. However, its status is still "Unconfirmed" as of 2020.
Some experts, like Arthur Capell and Norman Tindale, thought Kalibamu was a separate dialect. But other researchers, like Gavan Breen, believe that Kalibamu is actually the same as Kukatj. The Kalibamu people were the ones who spoke this language.
