Kukkarahalli lake facts for kids
Kukkarahalli Lake is a beautiful lake located right in the heart of Mysore city in India. It was created many years ago to help local farmers and provide water for the city. Today, it's a peaceful spot where people can walk, relax, and enjoy nature.
Building Kukkarahalli Lake
The lake was built in 1864 by Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, who was a ruler from the Mysore Dynasty. His main goal was to provide water for farming. The lake helped irrigate, or water, a huge area of land – about 4,000 hectares (which is like 10,000 acres!) outside the city. For a long time, the lake also supplied drinking water to the people of Mysore.
Protecting the Lake
Over the years, Kukkarahalli Lake faced some challenges. Things like dirty water from sewage and people building too close to the lake started to cause problems. These issues almost led to the lake becoming unhealthy, a process called eutrophication, where too many nutrients cause plants to grow too much and harm other life.
Luckily, people in Mysore care a lot about their lake. The University of Mysore and local community groups have been working hard to protect it. They are taking many steps to clean up the lake and keep it healthy for everyone to enjoy.
Enjoying the Lake Today
Kukkarahalli Lake is a wonderful place for people to visit. There's a long walkway around the edge of the lake, about 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) long. Along the path, you'll find shaded stone benches where visitors can sit, relax, and take in the calm beauty of the lake. It's a popular spot for walks, jogs, and enjoying the outdoors.
