If you're coming from Kumamoto Airport, an airport bus can get you there in about 40 minutes. There are also places to park cars right next to the castle.

The History of Kumamoto Castle

Building the Castle

Kumamoto Castle was finished in 1607. A powerful leader named Kato Kiyomasa built it. He was the very first lord, or ruler, of this amazing castle.

New Rulers and Challenges

After Kato Kiyomasa, the Hosokawa family became the lords of Kumamoto Castle. They ruled the castle for a very long time, about 240 years!

Damage and Repair

In 1877, a big event called the Satsuma Rebellion happened. During this time, Kumamoto Castle was badly damaged. Most of it was destroyed. But don't worry, in 1960, the main tower of the castle was rebuilt. This helped bring the castle back to its former glory.

Special Castle Walls

Kumamoto Castle has a very unique outer stone wall. It's called "Mushagaeshi." This special design helped protect the castle. The walls curve outwards near the top. This made it super hard for enemies to climb over them! It was a clever way to keep the castle safe.
