Kumler Hall is a historic building in Chester, South Carolina. It was once a dormitory, which is like a living space for students. Kumler Hall was part of a very important school called the Brainerd Institute.

The Brainerd Institute was one of the first and best private schools for African Americans in South Carolina. It opened after the American Civil War. This school helped many people who had just gained their freedom. The Presbyterian Church ran the school from about 1868 until 1940.

What is Kumler Hall Like?

Kumler Hall was built around 1916. It is a two-story building made of brick. It served as a dormitory for boys attending the Brainerd Institute.

Inside, the building has a long hallway down the middle. This hallway opens onto a porch. There is also a main staircase that goes up one flight. Classrooms and dormitory rooms were located on both sides of the hallway. You could find rooms on both the first and second floors, and even in the basement.
