Life in Kunawarritji

The Kunawarritji settlement was started in the early 1980s. A group of Martu people from Punmu created this community. It is about 5 kilometres north-west of a place called Well 33.

Who Lives Here?

Most people living in Kunawarritji are Martu people. There are usually about 115 people living here. However, the population can grow much larger. During important cultural events, up to 1000 people might visit. This shows how important the community is to all Martu people.

Connecting with Other Communities

Kunawarritji often connects with other large communities nearby. These include Punmu, which is 165 kilometres west, and Parnngurr, 230 kilometres west. People from these communities often visit each other.

Local Supplies

The community has a local store. Here, you can buy fuel like diesel and Opal fuel. The store also offers many other supplies that people need for daily life.

Land Rights and Ownership

The land where Kunawarritji is located has special meaning. It is part of a determined Martu native title claim area. This means the Martu people have traditional rights and interests in this land.

Managing the Land

A group called the Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation helps manage the Martu land. This group was officially registered in 2003. Any new buildings or projects in the community need their approval. This ensures that development respects the traditional owners' rights.

How the Community is Run

The Kunawarritji community is managed by its own group. This group is called the Kunawarritji Aboriginal Corporation. It was officially formed in 1995. They follow rules from a special law called the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976. This helps them run the community fairly.

Planning for the Future

The community has a special plan for how it will grow. This plan is called Kunawarritji layout plan No.1. The community members and the Western Australian Planning Commission approved it in 2004. This plan helps guide how new buildings and areas are set up.
