Kunigunde of Altdorf (born around 1020, died August 31, 1054) was an important woman from a powerful family. She was part of the Elder House of Welf, a noble family from the Swabia region. Kunigunde also became the ancestor of the younger House of Guelph. This was a new branch of the famous House of Este family.
Early Life and Family
Kunigunde was the only daughter of Welf II. He was the Count of Altdorf. Her mother was Imiza of Luxembourg.
Kunigunde was named after her mother's aunt, Cunigunde of Luxembourg. This aunt was married to Emperor Henry II. Kunigunde had one brother, Welf III. He died in 1055 and was the last member of the Elder House of Welf.
Marriage and Son
Around 1035, Kunigunde married Albert Azzo II, Margrave of Milan. He was a powerful ruler of places like Luni and Tortona. Albert Azzo II was the only son of Albert Azzo I.
When Kunigunde married, she brought a special gift called a dowry. Her dowry included the estate of Elisina. Today, this place is known as Solesino. This land had also been part of her mother Imiza's dowry.
Kunigunde and Albert Azzo had one son together:
- Welf IV (born between 1030 and 1040, died November 9, 1101). He was named after his uncle, Welf III. Welf IV later inherited his uncle's property. In 1070, Welf IV also became the Duke of Bavaria. This duchy had once been ruled by his great-great-uncle, Henry V, Duke of Bavaria.
