Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kuri Bay is a quiet bay far away in Western Australia. It's in the northern part of the Kimberley region, about 370 km (230 mi) north of Broome. The Bureau of Meteorology uses Kuri Bay to mark weather forecast areas.

The closest big town is Derby, about 223 km (139 mi) southwest. Kuri Bay opens right into the Indian Ocean. Augustus Island is a short distance from the bay's shore. Kuri Bay is also part of the Prince Regent National Park and the Kunmunya Aboriginal Reserve.

History of Kuri Bay

Kuri Bay is famous for being home to Australia's very first cultured pearl farm. This means people here learned to grow pearls inside oysters on purpose. The bay is named after Tokuichi Kuribayashi, who started the company in 1956.

This Japanese-American-Australian company began its work after the Western Australian Government changed a law. The old law used to stop people from making or selling cultured pearls.

World-Famous Pearls

By 1973, the Kuri Bay farm was producing a huge amount of pearls. It made 60% of the world's large, white South Sea pearls. These are very valuable and beautiful pearls.

Today, Paspaley, the biggest supplier of South Sea pearls in the world, has one of its largest pearl farms at Kuri Bay.

Kuri Bay's Climate

Kuri Bay has a tropical savanna climate. This type of climate means it's usually hot all year round. It has a wet season with lots of rain and a dry season with very little rain.
