Kurnangki is an Aboriginal community located in Fitzroy Crossing, a town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is part of the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley. This community is a special place for the Aboriginal people who live there.
How Kurnangki Began
The people of Kurnangki helped design and build their own community. They got help from the State Housing Commission of Western Australia. The Kurnangki community officially opened its doors on June 28, 1985.
How Kurnangki is Run
Kurnangki is managed by a group called the Kurnangki Aboriginal Corporation. This corporation is like a special organization that helps run the community. It was officially started on August 27, 1979.
Planning for the Future
The Kurnangki community has a special plan for its layout and development. This plan is called Kurnangki Layout Plan No.1. It follows rules set by the State Planning Policy 3.2 for Aboriginal Settlements. The community approved this plan on February 24, 2004. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on April 8, 2008.
