Kwabena Gyimah-Brempong was born in Kintampo, Ghana. He went to the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. There, he earned his first degree in 1974. In 1975, he moved to the United States. He continued his studies at Wayne State University. He earned his PhD in economics from Wayne State University in 1981.

Dr. Gyimah-Brempong has taught at several universities. He taught at the New College of Florida from 1981 to 1988. Then, he taught at Wright State University from 1988 to 1994. Since 1994, he has been a professor of economics at the University of South Florida.
