Kwango is one of the 26 provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its capital city is Kenge. The province gets its name from the Kwango River, which flows through the area. Kwango is located in the western part of this large African country.

Kwango Province: A Look at the Region

Kwango is a significant part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It covers a large area of about 89,974 square kilometers. This makes it a bit smaller than the state of Maine in the United States. In 2005, it was estimated that almost 2 million people lived in Kwango.

Important Towns and Cities

While Kenge is the capital, Kwango province has several other important towns. These towns are centers for local life and activities. Some of these include Popokabaka, Feshi, and Kasongo Lunda. Other notable places are Lusanga and Kahemba. Each town plays a role in the daily life and economy of the province.

Kwango's Journey to Becoming a Province

For many years, from 1966 to 2015, Kwango was not a full province on its own. It was managed as a district within a larger area called Bandundu Province. This meant it was part of a bigger administrative region. However, things changed on July 18, 2015. On that date, Kwango officially became a full province again. This change gave it more independence and control over its own affairs.
