Kyle Bernard Vander-Kuyp was born on May 30, 1971, in Paddington, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. He is an Indigenous Australian athlete. His family heritage comes from the Worimi and Yuin tribes of New South Wales. When he was just five weeks old, he was adopted by Pat and Ben Vander-Kuyp.

A Champion Hurdler

Kyle Vander-Kuyp is best known for his amazing skills in the 110 metres hurdles race. This is a track event where athletes run over ten barriers.

In 1995, Kyle set a new record for the Oceanian region (which includes Australia and nearby islands). He ran the 110-meter hurdles in an incredible 13.29 seconds at the 1995 World Championships in Athletics. This was a very fast time!

Kyle achieved great success during his career:

  • At the 1990 World Junior Championships in Athletics, he won a bronze medal in the 110-meter hurdles.
  • In 1994, at the Commonwealth Games in Canada, he won a silver medal as part of the 4 x 100-meter relay team.
  • He placed 5th in the 110-meter hurdles at the 1995 World Championships in Athletics.
  • At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, he finished 7th in the 110-meter hurdles final. This is a fantastic achievement at the highest level of sport.

Awards and Recognition

In 2022, Kyle was honored with the Australian Institute of Sport Athlete Community Engagement Award. This award recognized his efforts in connecting with and helping the community.
