The Kō'ula River, sometimes called Koula, is an important river on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. It is the largest stream that flows into the Hanapēpē River.

This river starts high up on Mt. Waialeale, about 4,642 feet (1,415 meters) above sea level. It flows south for about 9.2 miles (14.8 kilometers) until it meets the Manuahi Stream. After this meeting point, the river changes its name and becomes the Hanapēpē River. On average, the Kō'ula River carries about 85.2 cubic feet (2.4 cubic meters) of water every second.

Where the Kō'ula River Flows

The Kō'ula River is found on the beautiful island of Kauai, which is part of Hawaii in the United States. It plays a key role in the island's natural water system.

Starting Point: Mount Waialeale

The journey of the Kō'ula River begins on the slopes of Mount Waialeale. This mountain is famous for being one of the wettest places on Earth! The river's source is quite high up, at an elevation of 4,642 feet (1,415 meters). This high starting point gives the river a lot of energy as it flows downhill.

Journey to the Hanapēpē River

From its source, the Kō'ula River flows generally towards the south. It travels for about 9.2 miles (14.8 kilometers). Along its path, it collects water from smaller streams and rainfall. Eventually, it reaches a point where it joins with the Manuahi Stream. Once these two streams meet, the combined water flow is then known as the Hanapēpē River. This means the Kō'ula River is a major contributor to the larger Hanapēpē River system.

River Facts and Figures

Rivers like the Kō'ula have different measurements that help scientists understand them.

  • Length: The Kō'ula River flows for about 9.2 miles (14.8 kilometers) before it becomes the Hanapēpē River.
  • Source Elevation: It starts very high up, at 4,642 feet (1,415 meters) on Mt. Waialeale.
  • Water Flow (Discharge): On average, the river carries about 85.2 cubic feet (2.4 cubic meters) of water every second. This measurement tells us how much water moves past a certain point in the river over time.
