About Lê Thị Thanh Nhàn
Lê Thị Thanh Nhàn grew up in Thái Nguyên, Vietnam. She was born in Thừa Thiên–Huế. Her father was a soldier who passed away when she was young, and her mother was a teacher. She was the middle child in a family of five children.
Her Journey in Education
Lê Thị Thanh Nhàn always wanted to be a teacher. She studied mathematics at the Thái Nguyên College of Education from 1986 to 1990. After earning her first degree, she started working there as a mathematics lecturer. This meant she taught math to students.
She continued her studies to learn even more. In 1995, she earned a master's degree from Hanoi University of Education. Then, in 2001, she earned her Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) from the Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam Academy of Sciences and Technology. This is the highest degree you can get in a field of study.
Her Career and Achievements
In 2002, Lê Thị Thanh Nhàn moved to the College of Science. She quickly showed her talent and hard work. In 2005, she became an associate professor. At that time, she was the youngest mathematician in Vietnam to reach this high rank.
She also worked with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy. This is a place where scientists from all over the world come together to do research. She was a junior member from 2002 to 2007 and a regular member from 2009 to 2014. In 2009, she became a vice rector at her university. This means she helps lead the College of Science.
In 2015, Lê Thị Thanh Nhàn achieved another big milestone. She was promoted to a full mathematics professor. She became only the second woman in Vietnam to hold this important title. The first Vietnamese female mathematics professor was Hoàng Xuân Sính.

The Kovalevskaya Prize
In 2011, she was one of two winners of the Kovalevskaya Prize. This award is given every year to celebrate and encourage women in science in Vietnam. The prize is named after Sofia Kovalevskaya, a famous Russian mathematician. It was started in 1985 by mathematician Neal Koblitz and his wife, Ann Hibner Koblitz. They used money from a book Ann wrote about Sofia Kovalevskaya to fund the award.
