L'Anse-à-l'Orme Nature Park (which is Parc-nature de l'Anse-à-l'Orme in French) is a really big nature park. You can find it in the Pierrefonds-Roxboro area of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It's a great place to explore nature!

The park is located near Senneville Road. It opens up to a large area of water, which is part of the Lake of Two Mountains. This watery spot is called l'Anse à l'Orme, which means "Elm Cove" in English. The park covers a huge area of about 220 hectares (540 acres) (that's like 220 football fields!).

L'Anse-à-l'Orme Nature Park stretches along the cove for about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi). It's on both sides of where the Rivière à l'Orme (or "Elm River") flows into the lake. From the Lake of Two Mountains, the park goes inland for about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi). It follows the banks of the Rivière à l'Orme like a long, green corridor.

History of L'Anse-à-l'Orme Park

Have you ever wondered how places get their names? For L'Anse-à-l'Orme, there are a couple of ideas!

How the Park Got Its Name

Some people believe the park was named after the many elm trees (orme in French) that grew there. Others think the name remembers a person named Julien Hubert dit Delorme. He was given land next to the cove (anse in French) way back in 1698. Maps from 1744 already show the name "Rivière Anse à l'Orme." This name seemed to refer to both the river and the cove.

Growing the Park's Size

The park has grown quite a bit over the years! On September 17, 2008, the City of Montreal announced a big expansion. They added about 180 hectares (440 acres) to the park. Most of this new land was marshland located west of Pierrefonds-Roxboro.

The park got even bigger in 2011. An extra 31 hectares (77 acres) of land was added. This land was in the Rivière à l'Orme ecoterritory, which is in the nearby town of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. This expansion helped protect important forests and wetlands. It also added more trails for walking and biking, plus new areas for fun activities.

Future Plans for the Park

As of 2020, the City of Montreal has exciting plans for L'Anse-à-l'Orme Nature Park. They want to include it in a much larger project called the Grand Parc de L’Ouest. This means the park will become part of an even bigger natural space for everyone to enjoy!
