L'Île-Dorval is a very small city in southwestern Quebec, Canada. It is the same as Dorval Island, which is an island in Lake Saint-Louis. This island is located just off the Island of Montreal. It is a short distance from the city of Dorval. A special ferry connects L'Île-Dorval to the mainland, but it only runs during certain times of the year.
L'Île-Dorval is mostly a place for summer cottages. It has a tiny population. In 2021, only 30 people lived there all the time. This makes it one of the smallest cities in Canada, both in its size and the number of people living there. Even though few people live there permanently, many property owners can still vote in local elections.

A Look Back: The History of L'Île-Dorval
In 1691, a piece of land called Fort La Presentation, which included the island, was bought by Jean-Baptiste Bouchard. He signed his name as Jean-Baptiste Bouchard Dorval. The name "d'Orval" came from his father's hometown in France.
Around the mid-1800s, George Simpson, who was the Governor of the Hudson Bay Company, bought the island. He held a big party there for the Prince of Wales in August 1860.
How L'Île-Dorval Became a City
The idea to make the island a town came from the Dorval Island Park Company and a group of business people. They wanted to add things like electricity, water, streets, and even a tram to help the island grow with more homes.
On March 5, 1915, the town of Ville d'Ile Dorval was officially created. It separated from the nearby City of Dorval. The spelling of the name changed a few times over the years.
Changes in City Status
On January 1, 2002, L'Île-Dorval joined the city of Montreal. It became part of a larger area called Dorval–L'Île-Dorval. However, after a new government was elected and a special vote in 2004, L'Île-Dorval became an independent city again. This change happened on January 1, 2006.
