The L-spot basker (scientific name: Aethriamanta nymphaeae) is a type of dragonfly. It belongs to the Libellulidae family, also known as the skimmer dragonflies. You can find this interesting insect living in lagoons, ponds, and swamps. It mostly lives across the northern parts of Australia.
Spotting the L-spot Basker
The L-spot basker looks a lot like another dragonfly called the Square-spot basker. Because they are so similar, it can be tricky to tell them apart! Their common names come from the dark marks found on their hindwings.
The L-spot basker usually has a dark brown mark on its back wings. This mark often looks like the letter "L". It has a small dark patch that sits at a right angle. Sometimes, a lighter brown color surrounds these dark marks. These lighter areas can spread towards the edge of the wing. You might also see light brown marks on the front wings. Interestingly, some L-spot baskers might not have these dark markings at all!
