Louis Kossuth Atwood was a leader in Mississippi.

Louis Kossuth Atwood (born December 15, 1850 – died January 8, 1929) was an amazing person who did many important things in Mississippi. He was a lawyer, a bank founder, a minister, a teacher, and even a state lawmaker. He worked hard to help his community.

His Early Years and Education

Louis Kossuth Atwood was born on December 15, 1850, in Alabama. His parents were enslaved. When he was just 18 months old, he was sold at an auction. Luckily, his mother was able to buy him back. She then took him to Ohio, where he could be free.

Atwood went to school in Ripley, Ohio. He later attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, graduating in 1874. While at university, he also became a Presbyterian minister. He helped start the Southern Bank in Jackson, Mississippi, and became its president.

A Career of Many Roles

After finishing college, Atwood moved to Bolton, Mississippi. He began his career as a school teacher. Later, he worked in business.

He studied law and became a lawyer in 1879. He then opened his own law office in Bolton. In 1883, Atwood started a special company called the Sons and Daughters of Jacob of America. This company helped people by providing insurance, like a safety net for families. He led this company until he passed away.

Atwood also served in the government. He was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives for two terms. He represented Hinds County as a member of the Republican Party. This meant he helped make laws for the state. He also worked for the United States government as a tax collector until 1899. He attended several national meetings for the Republican Party.

His Legacy

Louis Kossuth Atwood passed away on January 8, 1929. Some reports say he died on January 7. A newspaper obituary called him "one of Mississippi's greatest negro citizens." He was married to Maggie Beatrice Welborne for 49 years. He was survived by his wife, one son (Dr. Mollison Atwood), and three daughters (Hcrtycena Dickson, Ollive McKissack, and Mary Millsaps).
