Lavaughan Venchael Booth (born January 7, 1919 – died November 16, 2002) was an important Baptist leader in the United States. He is remembered for starting the Progressive National Baptist Convention in 1961. He also founded the Marva Collins Preparatory School. For 30 years, he was the pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Cincinnati. He was also the first African American trustee at the University of Cincinnati.

Early Life and Education

Lavaughan Booth was born in Collins, Mississippi. He finished high school in 1936 at Hopewell High School. This school was in Hopewell, Covington County, Mississippi.

He earned a bachelor's degree in 1940 from Alcorn A&M. Later, he continued his studies at Gammon Theological Seminary. In 1943, he graduated with honors from Howard University's School of Religion. He was also the president of his class.

A Life of Leadership

Booth dedicated his life to serving his community. He became a respected voice in the Baptist church. His work helped to create new paths for many people.

He founded the Progressive National Baptist Convention. This organization played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement. It supported equality and justice for all people.

His work as a pastor at Zion Baptist Church lasted for three decades. He guided many people during this time. His role as a trustee at the University of Cincinnati was also very important. He was the first African American to hold this position.
