LIBRIS facts for kids
LIBRIS is an online list, or catalog, of books and other materials found in libraries across Sweden. Think of it as a giant digital library card catalog for the whole country! It brings together the collections of about 175 different libraries in Sweden.
This important catalog is managed by the Swedish National Library, which is located in Stockholm. LIBRIS helps people find out what books are available in Swedish libraries and where they can find them.
What LIBRIS Does
LIBRIS helps keep library information organized. It uses something called authority control. This means that names of authors, subjects, and other important details are always spelled and listed the same way. This makes it much easier to find exactly what you are looking for.
The system also holds lots of information about books. For example, it tells you the title, author, publisher, and when a book was published. Most importantly, it shows you which specific libraries have a copy of that book.
How LIBRIS Works
LIBRIS is a huge database of information. It is connected to something called the Semantic Web. This is a way for computers to understand information better, making it easier to search and connect different pieces of knowledge. It helps LIBRIS work smoothly and efficiently.
History of LIBRIS
The LIBRIS project first started in 1970. Over the years, it has grown to include millions of book titles. In 2011, the main lists of books and author information were made available to everyone. This means anyone can use this information freely, which is called being in the public domain. By 2014, LIBRIS contained details for about seven million different book titles!
