La Carballeda facts for kids
La Carballeda is a special area, or comarca, found in the northwest part of the province of Zamora. This province is in the region of Castilla y León, in western Spain. La Carballeda covers a large area of about 1,216 square kilometers (469 square miles).
Even though the people who live here feel a strong connection to their home, La Carballeda isn't officially recognized as an administrative region by the government. Because of this, the towns in the area have decided to work together. They've formed groups called mancomunidads. This allows them to manage their public services and resources as a team.
The main town in La Carballeda is Mombuey. However, the town with the most people is Villardeciervos, even though it only has about 491 residents. The name 'La Carballeda' comes from the many oak trees that grow there. These trees are known as carballos by the local people.
In the southwest part of La Carballeda, you'll find the Sierra de la Culebra mountain range. This area is very important because it's one of the few places in Western Europe where a large number of wild wolves still live.
