History of La Escondida
The town of La Escondida started to grow in the early 1900s. Three men, Carlos Nöettinger, Roberto, and Emilio Lepetit, moved to the area. They wanted to raise animals and use the forests. Their main goal was to extract tannins from trees.
The Tannin Factory and Town's Beginning
A tannin factory was built, and the village of La Escondida grew around it. The factory even built homes for its workers. This factory was connected to the railway station by a 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) long industrial railway. Today, it is one of only two tannin factories still working in Chaco.
How La Escondida Got Its Name
The town of La Escondida was officially founded on September 29, 1927. At first, it was called Desvío Kilómetro 917. This name came from its distance along the nearby railway line. In 1934, its name was changed to La Escondida. This new name came from a well-known local lagoon called La Escondida.
The town was designed like a "garden city." This was a new idea from Europe about how to plan and build cities. The plan for La Escondida was not approved until 1951. After that, the government allowed streets, squares, and public buildings to be built. The city looked different and more beautiful than other industrial towns of that time. It still has nice features, like many different kinds of trees planted along its streets.
Indunor Company
On July 1, 1968, two tannin companies joined together. La Chaqueña S. A. from Villa Ángela merged with Nöetinger Lepetit S.A. from La Escondida. The new company was named Indunor S.A.. This company continued the work of both older businesses.
The reopening of Indunor, which first started in 1914, greatly helped La Escondida. It stopped people from moving away to other cities. It also helped reduce poverty in the area. When tannin production started again, it helped other local industries, like forestry. This brought new life to the city.
Modern Industry
La Escondida has always been an agro-industrial city. This means it combines farming and industry. It grew with the tannin industry in the province. Today, it still has a large and modern factory. This factory continues to make quebracho extract using advanced technology. It also makes many other products that are sold in Argentina and around the world.
