The Sugar Factory
La Esperanza is famous for its historic sugar factory. This factory was started by two British brothers, Walter and William Leach. They were industrialists, meaning they built and ran large businesses.
Early History
The Leach brothers founded the sugar factory in the early 1900s. It became a very important part of the town. Many people worked there, producing sugar.
Robert Lehmann-Nitsche's Research
In 1906, a German anthropologist named Robert Lehmann-Nitsche visited the factory. An anthropologist studies human societies and cultures. He noticed that the workers came from many different groups. They often sang while they worked.
Lehmann-Nitsche made recordings of their songs. He used 30 phonograph cylinders for this. These recordings were sent to the Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv. This archive collects and preserves sound recordings.
Concerns About Working Conditions
Later, Lehmann-Nitsche faced criticism for his research. People pointed out that he focused on the songs. But he did not pay enough attention to the difficult working conditions. Some native Argentinian workers at the factory faced unfair treatment.
Recent Changes to the Factory
The sugar factory faced many challenges over twenty years. In 2015, the government started to manage it. Then, in 2019, the factory was sold. It was bought by a group of private companies. This new ownership aimed to help the factory continue its operations.
