La Tallera facts for kids
La Tallera is a very special art center in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. It used to be the workshop of a famous Mexican artist named David Alfaro Siqueiros. Today, it is one of the most important art places in Mexico.
Siqueiros had a big dream for this space. He said that he and another famous artist, Diego Rivera, had an idea since 1920. They wanted to create a real workshop for mural painting. Murals are huge paintings made directly on walls. In this workshop, artists could try out different painting methods, materials, and ways to show depth and shapes.
Siqueiros imagined a huge workshop. It would have lots of machines, moving platforms for painting high walls, and even science labs. These labs would test how long colors would last. It would also have special materials for art, a photography studio, and film cameras. Basically, it would have everything a muralist could ever need! He wanted it to be a place where artists could explore new ideas about colors and shapes in a big, open space.
How La Tallera Began
The idea for La Tallera started thanks to a man named Don Manuel Suárez y Suárez. He was a person who loved and supported the arts. He asked Siqueiros to create 18 paintings for a big hall at the Hotel Casino de la Selva in Cuernavaca.
During a time when Siqueiros was unable to work freely, he thought about this project even more. He decided that instead of making many separate paintings, he would create one giant mural. While he was unable to work outside, Siqueiros drew about 200 images. These drawings helped him plan the big mural's theme and design.
