Life of Lachlan MacLean
Early Life and Nickname
Lachlan was the seventh leader, or Chief, of the MacLean clan. He was called "Bronnach" because he was quite large. This nickname meant "swag-bellied."
He fought alongside his father at the Battle of Harlaw. During this battle, Lachlan was captured. He became a prisoner of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Mar. While he was held captive, he met Lady Margaret. She was the Earl's daughter. Lachlan later married Lady Margaret. He was not held prisoner for a very long time.
A Time of Conflict
Lachlan was not as focused on war as his father. However, he was always ready to act when needed. His name became well-known around the year 1427. This was when King James I caused a conflict.
King James I called a meeting of leaders in Inverness in 1427. Many Highland chiefs were invited to attend. As the chiefs entered the meeting hall, they were all arrested. They were put in chains in different parts of the building. No one was allowed to talk to another chief. Two chiefs were immediately executed. The others were sent to various prisons. Some were later freed, but many were put to death.
Fighting for Justice
In 1429, Lachlan was asked to help the young Lord of the Isles. The Lord wanted to get revenge for the King's actions. Lachlan and other clan leaders joined forces. They marched against the town of Inverness. They burned the town to the ground. They also damaged some lands belonging to the King.
King James I quickly gathered a large army. He launched a surprise attack on the clans. Lachlan, the Lord of the Isles, and other leaders had to surrender. They were all imprisoned in Tantallon Castle.
