Lachlan Maclean (born around 1470 – died 1513) was an important leader of a Scottish family group called Clan MacLean. He was the tenth person to hold the title of Clan Chief, which is like being the head of the family. He became Chief in 1496 after his father passed away.
Early Life and Becoming Chief
Lachlan Maclean was born around the year 1470. His father was Hector Odhar Maclean, 9th Chief. When his father died in 1496, Lachlan became the new Chief of Clan MacLean. This meant he was responsible for leading his family and their lands.
Life as a Clan Leader
As a Clan Chief, Lachlan had many duties. He managed the lands of his clan. He also dealt with legal matters and agreements. Records show that he was recognized as the Lord of Duart from 1499 onwards.
Lachlan also had to interact with the King of Scotland. For example, in 1506, he was asked to help the Bishop of the Isles collect church rents. In 1508, he was given permission to sell some of his lands. He also received a "safe conduct" in 1510. This was a special letter that allowed him and his family to travel safely to meet the King.
Death and Legacy
Lachlan Maclean's time as Chief ended in 1513. He was killed during a major battle called the Battle of Flodden. This battle took place on September 9, 1513. After his death, his son, Lachlan Cattanach Maclean, 11th Chief, became the next leader of Clan MacLean.
