How the Quartet Started
The Laclede Quartet was founded by a talented violinist named Sallie Coffman. She is also the main violinist, or concertmaster, for the St. Louis Muny orchestra. The group comes from the St. Louis area, which is in both Missouri and Illinois.
Their Amazing Music
People really enjoy the Laclede Quartet's performances, especially when they play popular music. Their CDs have also been very popular. For example, their second album, released in 1992, featured music by the famous composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. This album was their biggest success at that time.
Reaching Audiences Far Away
The Laclede Quartet's music has even reached people in the Middle East! This happened with help from Hillary Clinton, who was a famous American politician and the First Lady of the United States at the time. In an interview from 2000, Sallie Coffman shared how it happened. She said, "We met her [Clinton] when she was in St. Louis and she took our recordings back to the White House." Sallie explained that somehow the recordings made it to an embassy in Abu Dhabi. The quartet was very excited to get fan mail from Abu Dhabi through a special official mail system.
Their Albums
The Laclede Quartet has recorded five music CDs. You can buy these albums in stores around St. Louis or find them on the quartet's website.
