Lacuy Peninsula facts for kids
The Lacuy Peninsula is a piece of land that sticks out into the ocean. You can find it in the northwestern part of Chiloé Island. This peninsula is just a few kilometers west of the city of Ancud.
During the time when Spain ruled this area, the Lacuy Peninsula was very important. It had a strong Spanish fort system. This system included three batteries (places with big cannons), one lookout post, and a main fort.
The Historic Agüi Fort
The main fort on the peninsula was called Fuerte de Agüi. This fort played a big role in history. In 1820, a major event known as the battle of Agüi happened right here. This battle was a key moment in the fight for independence.
Geology of Lacuy
The peninsula is also known in geology. A special rock layer called the Lacui Formation is named after this area. Geologists study this formation to learn about the Earth's past.
