Raymond Oladipupo Ladebo, also known as Ladi Ladebo (born May 7, 1942 – died April 16, 2021), was a famous Nigerian filmmaker. He was one of the first people to create movies during the "Golden Age" of Nigerian cinema. This was especially true in the 1970s, when films were made using celluloid. Before he started making movies, he worked as a media expert and an accountant. Many people also called him Uncle Ladi.

Ladi Ladebo's Career
After finishing high school in Nigeria, Ladi Ladebo traveled to the United States for college. He studied marketing and business there. In 1968, he earned a degree in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. The next year, in 1969, he received his MBA degree in Marketing from the New York University Graduate School of Business.
Starting in Film and Advertising
Ladi Ladebo began his journey into the film world through advertising. From 1969 to 1972, he worked for a big international advertising company called Ogilvy and Mather. He was a media analyst and an account executive.
His experience in advertising helped him get jobs in American movies and TV shows. He worked as a production assistant for feature films and as a line producer for television programs.
Working with Ossie Davis
Ladi Ladebo started working with the well-known African-American actor Ossie Davis. He wrote the script and produced the 1976 American film Countdown at Kusini. Ossie Davis directed this movie.
Countdown at Kusini was important because it was seen as the first film made by Black Americans. It was also the first time Ladi Ladebo and Ossie Davis worked together on a film.
Directing and Producing Films
Ladi Ladebo also directed several films. These included Bisi, Daughter of the River in 1977. He also directed Silent Sufferer, which he made with UNESCO and UNPFA. After 1977, he often made films that promoted important causes. He worked with organizations like UNESCO and UNPFA to fund these projects.
He also produced other notable films. His film Vendor, released in 1992, won four awards. These awards included Best Director and Best Feature Film at the first Nigerian Film Festival in 1992. His last film as a director was Heritage, released in 2003. This film also premiered in the UK in 2004.
Television Work
Besides movies, Ladi Ladebo also produced television shows. His TV series called Thrift Collector was very successful. It was chosen by the Rotterdam Museum of Ethnology as one of the best TV shows about population and development.
Ladi Ladebo's Death
Ladi Ladebo passed away on April 16, 2021. He was 78 years old and died in London.
