History of the Lafayette Lamb House
Original Design and Construction (1877)
The Lafayette Lamb House was first designed by a talented architect from Clinton named W.W. Sanborn. He created the house in the Second Empire style, which was popular back then. This style often included fancy details like a special roof and towers.
The house was built in 1877, and J. C. Clausen was in charge of making sure everything was constructed correctly. When it was first finished, the house had an outside made of red bricks. It also featured a unique mansard roof (a roof with four sloping sides) and a cool tower with a pointed top, called a turret.
This grand home was built for Lafayette Lamb, who was a very successful businessman. He was known as a "lumber baron" because he made a lot of money in the timber industry, which means he dealt with wood and trees.
Major Renovation and New Look (1906)
Many years later, in 1906, the Lafayette Lamb House got a huge makeover! The original red bricks on the outside were removed. In their place, new gray bricks made of cement were installed by the Iowa Granite Brick company.
During this big renovation, the fancy mansard roof was taken off and replaced with a flat roof. The turreted tower, which was a key part of its original look, was also removed. Because of all these changes, the house looked completely different. It now showed off the Georgian Revival style, which is a more classic and formal look.
A New Purpose: The YWCA (1920)
In 1920, the Lafayette Lamb House was given as a gift to the YWCA. The YWCA is an organization that helps women and girls in many ways, offering programs and support. They still use the building today! Over the years, other parts have been added to the building to help the YWCA serve the community even better.
