History of Lago Rosario
The area around Lago Rosario has an interesting past. It was explored and settled over time.
Early Explorations
In 1885, Luis Jorge Fontana, who was the first governor of the Chubut territory, explored this region. He named the area "Rosario Lago." This name came from the beautiful Lake Rosario nearby. Fontana was part of the Chubut Riflemen group during his explorations.
The 1902 Border Vote
On April 30, 1902, something very important happened near Lago Rosario. People living in a place called Colony October 16, many of whom were Welsh settlers, took part in a special vote. They voted to decide if their land should belong to Argentina or Chile. This vote helped solve a disagreement about the border between the two countries.
First Settlers and New Arrivals
The very first families to settle in this area were the Cheuquehuala and Millahuala families. Later, in 1937, more people came to live in Lago Rosario. These new arrivals included families who had moved from the Aboriginal Reserve of Nahuelpan, which is about 30 kilometers north of Lake Rosario. Many people had moved from Nahuelpan in 1908, and some of these families later found a new home in Lago Rosario.
