Lake Adger is a beautiful mountain lake. You can find it in Polk County, North Carolina. It is located north of Tryon and south of Lake Lure, North Carolina.

Discovering Lake Adger: A Mountain Lake Story
Lake Adger was created in 1925. This happened when Blue Ridge Power built a dam. The dam was placed on the Green River at a spot called Turner Shoals. The lake covers about 438 acres. It also has over 14 miles of shoreline.
Who Owns Lake Adger?
Most of the land around Lake Adger is private. This means it belongs to individuals. However, there is a public boat landing. This landing is leased by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. They pay $15,000 each year for it. This allows everyone to enjoy boating and fishing there.
In 2009, Polk County bought the lake. They paid $1.6 million for it. Now, Polk County owns the Lake Adger Dam. They also own all the land under the water. Plus, they own the land up to the high water line around the lake.
How Lake Adger Got Its Name
Lake Adger was named after John Adger Law. He was the person who started the Blue Ridge Power Company. His mother's maiden name was Adger. So, he decided to name the lake after her family. The lake was first called Turner Shoals Lake. But John changed the name after the dam was finished. The dam itself is still known as Turner Shoals Dam.
How the Dam Works
As of 2014, Northbrook Hydroelectric operates the dam. They lease it from Polk County. The dam helps release water and create electricity. The Duke Power Steam station is downstream from Lake Adger. It uses the water released by Turner Shoals Dam. This water helps cool the plant's big machines called turbines.
